O'Leno 2002 Trip Reports

Old Bellamy Map

18 August 2002 -

Location:            Ogden Pond, O'Leno State Park

Divers:                Michael Poucher, Sandra Poucher
Profile:               6 minutes to a depth of 51 feet
Conditions:         81 degrees, visibility was approximately 1 foot
Description:        Had planned a double stage penetration dive. Visibility in the pond was extremely tannic. Swam through floating vegetation to find the down line hoping the vis cleared on the way down. Turned when apparent the vis was not clearing. Large bullfrogs we heard calling turned out to be happy alligators with a deer carcass on the other side of the lake (per one of the rangers).

4 August 2002 -

Location:            Ogden Pond, O'Leno State Park

Divers:                Michael Poucher, Sandra Poucher
Profile:               229 minutes to a depth of 129 feet
Conditions:         65 degrees, visibility was approximately 40 feet
Description:        Adding line to Ogden and survey of the cavern. Vis was not as good as Mike had hoped. High amount of hydrogen sulfide. During deco on vertical limestone wall noticed very small clams in all of the crevices and cracks and ledges.

Ogden had many dead crayfish - red is color probably saw 20 - 30. Saw one live one as we exited. East side has sheer walls cut by fissures. Walls 50' down and slopes into cave. Large breakdown at beginning. Large passage, sheer walls, curved ceiling.

4 April 2002 -

Location: Ogden Pond, O'Leno State Park

Divers: Al Heck, Cindy Butler

Profile: 114ft/121min on 26% EAN with 18min deco on O2

Conditions:   10ft vis. Temp 71degF

Description:  Entered Ogden lake at the SW end. Swam along the left hand wall of a fissure until we entered an overhang area that turned into cave. Swam along the left hand side of the wall until we reached a swallow area with a silt mound that we believe is the sink located between the pond and river sink. Swam again along the left wall until we reached an area that was littered with large trees and debris. Tied off the line in River sink and ascended to 10 feet in the daylight zone. We did not surface due to deco. obligation. Survey done on the way back to Ogden Pond.

Location       Mae Callie Sink

Divers :         C. Butler, A. Heck
Profile          111ft/84min on 30% EAN with 36min deco on O2
Conditions    64deg in basin; vis in system about 10ft
Description   After swimming around in circles on Saturday, we returned Sunday with a plan. Entered at 'No Name' Sink and immediately tied into line at the first overhang (30ft). Swam directly to the left wall and followed it entire dive. Got into a low silty possible side tunnel at one point but backed out and relocated main tunnel and continued. Didn't connect to Two Hole/Vaughn line but it felt close. Surveyed on way out.

16 February 2002 -

Location:     Two Hole

Divers:         Cindy Butler, Al Heck
Dive Profile: 107ft/94min  on 30% EAN w/single stage and O2 deco
Water Conditions: 25 to 30ft vis and 73degF in Two Hole tunnel
10 to 15 ft vis and 68degF in tunnel east of sink
Description: Followed south-heading line out of Two Hole to the
T by Vaughn Sink. Dropped stages and T-d into the line.

swam due east until we hit the east wall of the collapse area and followed the wall southeast until we could again resume
a due east path. Swam east up and over the silt mound getting as shallow as 50ft in one spot. Swam down into clearer, cooler
water on east side of silt mound and followed right wall until I hit the end of line on the reel. Staked the line as we went and
tied to a stake at the end of the line. Surveyed on way out. Reeled up redundant line after finishing survey.

Location: Hawg Sink

Divers:     Cindy Butler, Al Heck
Dive Profile: 141ft/91min on 28% EAN w/single stage    O2Deco
Water Conditions: 5ft vis and cold (Cindy had 62degF in basin)
Description: Followed the north line from the basin to the first T. Took the first T to the north across the main tunnel to the end of the line in the north-heading tunnel. Laid 510ft of line going north. It became obvious quickly that this tunnel is small and probably not the main passage but it was still going at the end of our line. Surveyed on way out.

3 February 2002 -

Location:            Two Hole, O'Leno State Park

Divers:                Al Heck, Michael Poucher, Sandra Poucher
Profile:                127 minutes at a depth of   feet
Conditions:           degrees, visibility was approximately   feet
Description:

2002 -

Location:            Derickson Pond

Divers:                Al Heck, Michael Poucher
Conditions:         74 degrees, visibility was approximately 15 feet
Description:        Al and Mike went towards Mae Callie/Vaughn Sink, measured 40 feet across the passage. Saw a "line" where the sulfide was flowing.

 20 January 2002 -

Cindy Butler, Al Heck, Beth Murphy, Jerry Murphy, Michael Poucher and Sandra Poucher met at Harley Sink to remove the motorcycle.  After Al and Cindy attached a 500 pound lift bag, courtesy of John Moseley, we were able to get the motorcycle to the surface. We tried to use a pulley with a line stretched across the sink between two trees, but the weight of the motorcycle quickly dictated another method was needed.  After several more hours of wrestling with the beast, we were finally able to move it onto the bank using a come-along.  Once we had it on the surface, we found out it was indeed a Harley Davidson and we re-christened the sing "Hawg Sink"  after the chrome "hawg" on the back rest.

5 January 2002 -

Dive profile:141ft/89min; 28% nitrox w/single stage; O2 deco; 85 min total deco
Description: Descended down the upstream line and followed it to the end. Switched to back gas and layed 475 feet of line. Surveyed on way out. Cindy Butler and Al Heck dove in Harley sink. Visibility was about 5ft. No noticeable flow. Less gas on the surface. Brief attempt to retrieve the motorcycle failed as it became dislodged on ledge at 110ft and fell to 140. Also a lot of overhangs and tree branches to negotiate. Need to cut a lot of tree branches before raising it.
